Proper Care

Before Adoption, we want to make sure all potential adoptees have the basic knowledge of taking care of a guinea pig so that these animals can live happily and properly cared for. Like all animals, guinea pigs are a big responsibility and require specific needs daily as well as only ever so often. With this however, they are cuddly, loving and amazing companions! They make great playmates for all ages and would love to be your friend!

Daily Care:

Guinea pigs need 4 things daily in order to live in an environment that they can thrive in:

  • Hay that is always available, whether that be Timothy or Orchard Grass

  • A balanced diet of pellets, we use Vitakraft Menu Brand, and fresh fruit as well as vegetables

  • Fresh water in a bowl or water bottle at all times

  • Vitamin C supplements in liquid or solid form, which can be placed in food or water

Every so often Care:

Guinea pigs have nails that can get very sharp when not treated properly. Make sure to clip their nails using a small animal nail clipper every 2-3 months to make sure their nails are more dull and groomed. Guinea pigs will also need to go to the vet from time to time, infections like upper respiratory can be common in these small and fragile animals so it is important to make sure that they stay healthy! In case of an infection or illness, here are a list of 24 hour vets in the local area:

BluePearl Pet Hospital (Renton, Tacoma, Lakewood)

Puget Sound Veterinary Specialty (Gig Harbor)

Emerald City Emergency Clinic (Seattle)

Animal Medical Center (Seattle)

Seattle Veterinary Specialists (Seattle)

Social & Habitual Needs

Guinea pigs are social creatures who need constant attention from their humans or from other guinea pigs. Our personal recommendation to you is to consider getting at least 2 guinea pig pups because of how social of an environment these animals need to be in to thrive. When considering this, gender is one of the most important factors. Age, breed and size are also factors to consider, but different ages, breeds and sizes can get along just fine with proper care!

Guinea pigs also need a large habitat to be able to have enough space. Their habitat also needs to be neat and cleaned daily to prevent infection and illness. When going through adoption process, contact us to see about if your planned habitat will be right for a new furry friend!
